New affordable housing program targets D.C. ‘grandfamilies’

by Mission First Housing

While there are numerous initiatives to build and preserve affordable housing in the District, one of the more unusual recent developments includes apartments designed expressly for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

The 223-unit Plaza West development, with entrances at 1035 Fourth St. NW and 307 K St. NW, is a 12-story building with 50 units designated for “grandfamilies” with a household income of 30 to 40 percent of area median income, which is currently $117,200. In addition, 173 of the units will serve individuals and families making 50 to 60 percent of area median income, and 11 units will be set aside for clients of the D.C. Department of Behavioral Health.

The “grandfamily” project is the first residential housing of this type in the District. The District is the ninth city across the country to establish a residential grandfamilies program, according to the D.C. government.
