BALTIMORE — After decades of housing low-income people in Baltimore City, the last few buildings of the Perkins Homes are coming down and new state-of-the-art housing is coming up in its place.

Perkins Homes went up in the 1940s, and over the years, housed countless families.

On Monday morning, Gov. Larry Hogan traded his day job to climb aboard an excavator to help take down one of the last buildings of the homes.

“Stress reliever — you get to crunch things and take them down. I want to do this every day,” Hogan said.

The demolition clears the way for construction to begin later this fall on what will become the first phase of the new Perkins Homes. It’s part of the housing authority’s $1 billion Perkins Somerset Oldtown redevelopment plan.

“It will be a community of choice — A vibrant community with new schools, new parks, restaurants, a walkable community that anyone — mixed-income families can enjoy,” said Janet Abrahams, president and CEO of Housing Authority of Baltimore City.
