Breaking Ground on 223-unit Grandfamilies project in DC: Plaza West Under Construction

by Mission First Housing

On Monday, June 13, The Honorable Muriel Bowser, Mayor, District of Columbia and The Honorable Charles Allen, Councilmember of Ward 6 joined Mission First, project partners, funders and community supporters to break ground on Plaza West.

In partnership with Golden Rule Plaza Inc., a nonprofit subsidiary of Bible Way Church, and the Henson Development Company, we have started construction on this 223-unit project at the northeast corner of 4th and K Streets NW in Washington, DC.

The development will consist of two components: The grandfamilies component will provide 50 apartment homes for grandparents raising grandchildren and will serve families making between 30% – 50% Area Median Income (AMI); and the affordable component will consist of 173 apartment homes set aside for individuals and families making <60% of AMI.

The grandfamilies component will provide significant support services, targeting the children and the seniors raising them. A social service consultant was engaged to define an appropriate scope of services and potential service partners have been identified.

Plaza West is expected to open in 2018.
